KOO Bon-A

Starting from the perspective of traditional Eastern painting, Koo Bon-a incorporates subtle perceptions and reflections from daily life into her art. Her long-standing exploration of the passage of life and time is expressed through refined techniques that merge the lyrical depth of Korean Dongyanghwa (Oriental painting) with sumptuous layers of pigment, creating dazzling images marked by strong individuality. The richly layered colors and brushstrokes function both as records of existence and as traces of time’s ongoing extension. Koo often uses thick, textured Korean paper as her base, cutting, collaging, and layering it repeatedly to form vivid visual elements beyond mere pigment. These textures not only enhance the spatial quality of her compositions but also suggest the invisible imprints of time. For Koo, art is a process of coexisting, conversing, and inquiring with time—transforming fleeting moments into visible forms that allow viewers to sense the traces and poetry of life within the flow of time.

The “Poetry on the Wall (벽에 쓰는 시)” series serves as the theme of this exhibition, highlighting the artist’s reflections on the meaning of time for humanity. In ancient Roman architecture, inscriptions of symbols and poems on walls remain as enduring traces that link creation with nothingness, even though their creators have long since passed. From this, Koo perceives the inevitability of both the distant past and the vanishing future, recognizing the fleeting interval that lies between two eternities. Her works thus embody a profound meditation on the boundlessness and weight of time. In the “Co-evolution series (共進化)”, KOO draws inspiration from the biological concept of co-evolution, in which different species evolve through interaction and interdependence. Through contrasts between concrete city walls and organic materials, and between the similarities and dissonances within nature itself, she explores the duality of incompletion and collapse, while evoking a heightened awareness of existence linked to humanity. Her “White Night (흰밤)” series is inspired by "The White Book", a novel by Nobel Prize-winning author Han Kang, reflects on time not as a linear progression but as a space of repetition, accumulation, and condensation. Through the interplay between the rational, material qualities of day and the spiritual, infinite qualities of night, she contemplates the vulnerability of human existence and the desire to transcend its limits. Her work invites viewers to discover a flicker of hope within the subtle intervals between light and darkness.

KOO Bon-a is a Korean artist specializing in Oriental painting. She holds a Ph.D. in Fine Arts from Hongik University. Combining traditional techniques with contemporary perspectives, her work continuously explores the layered relationships between time, memory, and landscape. She has held solo exhibitions at major institutions including the Seoul Arts Center, OCI Museum of Art, Incheon Art Platform, Dynasty Gallery in Taipei, and venues in Shanghai. Her work has been featured in prominent international exhibitions such as the Jeonnam Sumuk Biennale, the Korean Cultural Center in Hong Kong, Taoyuan Museum of Fine Arts (Taiwan), the Beijing International Ink Design Biennale, Art Olympia at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Center in India, Google Headquarters in the United States, and the K11 Art Foundation. Her works are part of the permanent collections of major institutions including the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA), Seoul Museum of Art, OCI Museum of Art, Incheon Art Platform, and the Muan Oh Seungwoo Museum of Art.
