很高興向您宣布,《向一棵棕櫚樹致敬:郭佩奇個展》開幕將於2023年8月12號在朝代畫廊舉行,展期至9月9日。此次個展將首次於台灣展出郭佩奇在洛杉磯駐村時創作的裝置與錄像作品《向一棵棕櫚樹致敬》、探討聲音可能性的《聲音肖像》系列錄像與版畫作品,以及數件錄像新作。

郭佩奇擅長結合視覺、音樂、聲音等不同的元素,從而體驗社會環境氛圍,亦善於將人與人之間的政治,權力與矛盾關係轉化成創作,不管是兩岸或是國際政治現況,皆反映台灣人自身意識形態的牴觸與衝突。

We are pleased to announce that "Salute to a Palm Tree: Pei-Chi KUO solo exhibition" will be opening at Dynasty Gallery on 2023.8.12 and will run until 9.9. This exhibition marks Pei-Chi GUO's installations and video work "Salute to a Palm Tree" created during her residency in Los Angeles will be the first time exhibited in Taiwan. The exhibition will also present "Sound Portrait," a series of video and print works exploring the possibilities of sound, as well as several new video works.

Pei-Chi KUO excels in blending various elements such as visual arts, music, and sound to immerse people in the atmosphere of society environments. She skillfully transforms the complexities of politics, power dynamics, and contradictions between individuals into her creations, reflecting the ideological conflicts and tensions inherent in Taiwanese society, be it in cross-strait relations or international politics.

郭佩奇《向一棵棕櫚樹致敬》

本作品名稱《向一棵棕櫚樹致敬》與展覽同名,郭佩奇年幼時曾隨時任海軍軍官的父親至加州駐紮一年,這對她來說是一種模糊、依稀卻又深刻的片段記憶;時光荏苒,藝術家於27年後至洛杉磯駐村三個月,期間她將美國國旗放置在不同的海岸並且空拍,與太平洋的若有似無的接觸彷彿象徵了她與這塊土地的關係。

 

之後,她以加州隨處可見的棕櫚樹為題材,開始與一同訪美的父親縫紉這面旗幟。作品將這段期間所發生的國際時事、體會到的感官經驗等,與那段特殊的兒時家庭回憶做出連結。藝術家把兩種不同時空的情感藉由作品串起,卻因時代背景的不同,從而產生出高度反差的立場。

 

The artwork is titled "Salute to a Palm Tree," which shares its name with the exhibition. During her childhood, Pei-Chi GUO accompanied her father, who was then a naval officer, to a year-long assignment in California. This experience left her with a hazy yet deeply resonant fragment of memory. As time passed, in the year 2022, 27 years later, the artist undertook a three-month residency in Los Angeles. During this period, she placed the American flag at various coasts, capturing aerial shots. The subtle contact with the Pacific Ocean seemed to symbolize her connection with this land.

 

Following this, she chose the abundant California palm tree as her subject and began sewing the flag alongside her father, who joined her in visiting the United States. The artwork connects the international events of that time, sensory experiences, and the distinctive memories of her childhood home. The artist weaves together emotions from these two different periods through her work, creating a stark contrast in perspectives due to the differing historical backgrounds.

郭佩奇《粉紅軍艦》

郭佩奇的父親在她幼年時,奉命與其他同袍前往美國,展開將一艘諾克斯級(濟陽級)巡防艦駛回台灣的一年任務,郭佩奇亦一同跟隨前往。成年後,她有了將當年的那艘大船以AI再現的想法,在輸入關鍵字後,出現的成果卻是一台佈滿粉紅色的軍艦。縱使如此,郭佩奇仍然以這台虛擬軍艦為主角,並製作了這部色彩繽紛的影片,內容以二戰時日本偷襲珍珠港後美國參戰,至戰爭結束為主題,影片呈現了AI對於這個「它」從未經歷過的戰爭的理解,同時也表達了藝術家對於文化多重轉譯所產生的模糊曖昧乃至荒謬的概念。此外,她也與父親與姊夫將一艘等比例縮小的軍艦模型塗裝成粉紅色,作為實體呼應。

 

During Pei-Chi GUO's childhood, her father was assigned, along with his comrades, to the United States for a year-long mission to bring a Knox-class frigate (Chih Yang-class) back to Taiwan. GUO accompanied him on this journey. In her adulthood, she conceived the idea of using AI to recreate that ship from her past. However, when she input the keywords, the result was a pink-colored battleship. Despite this, Guo Peiqi still centered her work around this virtual battleship and created a vibrant video.

 

The video's content revolves around the theme of World War II, from the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor to the United States' involvement and the war's conclusion. It presents AI's understanding of a war "it" never experienced, while also conveying the artist's exploration of the vague, ambiguous, and even absurd concepts arising from multiple cultural interpretations.

 

Furthermore, GUO along with her father and brother-in-law, painted a scaled-down model of a battleship in pink as a physical counterpart to her concept.

郭佩奇《讀盲》

尺寸視場地而定, 雙聲道錄像、裝置, 2019

一位盲人操作著點字機,正打著一份文件《舊金山合約》,此合約又名《對日和平條約》,於1951年由戰勝國與戰敗國日本簽訂於舊金山,也奠定了現今台灣社會的不確定性的基礎,而大部分人民依循著日常,於某種心理狀態上的視而不見,仰賴著將自身蒙蔽雙眼,呈現失明感的維持現狀。點字機打字的節奏如同敲打著鋼琴鍵盤上的音樂,將此份文件,依循著點字機的鍵盤,轉化至鋼琴鍵盤,由音樂家演繹出此曲,由點字譯文的《舊金山合約》,似是美妙樂音的鋼琴,透過轉譯成為一曲半自動產生的聲音,在此無調性的音樂底下,呈現台灣人心裡的矛盾與焦慮。

此份譯文將中文點字邏輯與音樂系統交互轉化,呈現三種語言的轉譯,錄像搭配實物樂譜,與翻譯規則的碑文於現場,猶如古代文字密碼一般的神秘,觀眾可以翻閱樂譜搭配碑文,解讀文件上音符的內容。呈現音樂不只是音樂,中文點字不只是點字的相互辯證的過程。

A blind man is operating a braille machine and is working on a document "TREATY OF PEACE WITH JAPAN”. This contract lays the foundation for the uncertainty of today's Taiwan society, and most people follow daily routines and turn a blind eye to a certain psychological state. Relying on blindfolding their eyes and showing the current status of blindness.

The rhythm of the braille machine typing is like hitting the music on the piano keyboard. This document is converted to the piano keyboard according to the keyboard of the braille machine. The musician performs the song. "TREATY OF PEACE WITH JAPAN” translated by braille The piano, which seems to be a beautiful musical tone, is translated into a semi-automatically generated sound. Under this non-musical sound, it presents the contradictions and anxieties in the hearts of Taiwanese people.

郭佩奇《聲音肖像 - 拜登》

130x75x20cm, 錄像裝置, 2023

《聲音肖像系列-Joe Biden》本系列以政治人物為主題,結合人物肖像與樂譜,將音符排列成一張張政治人物的臉孔樂譜。隨著樂譜上時間軸的移動,音符依序發出旋律,但演奏到人物肖像的音符時,卻變為十分眇雜、沒有結構的聲響,藉此表達看似合理與規則的政治體制,卻衍生出充滿各種矛盾與不理性的政治生態。此作品以美國人耳熟能詳的愛國歌曲 「The Beautiful America」,火紅的程度幾乎與國歌一樣,以此曲作為背景旋律,表現拜登的一生為國家從政到老才當上總統的政治家精神。
"Sound Portrait - Joe Biden" This series revolves around political figures as its theme, combining individual portraits with musical scores. It arranges musical notes into a mosaic of political figures' facial profiles. As the timeline on the score progresses, the notes emit a sequence of melodies. However, when it comes to the notes representing the facial features, the harmonious sequence transforms into a cacophonous and disorganized sound. Through this, the artwork conveys the seemingly rational and regulated political system that gives rise to a political ecosystem filled with contradictions and irrationality. The piece utilizes the well­known patriotic song "The Beautiful America," a tune nearly as popular as the national anthem, as its background melody. This choice underscores Biden's lifelong dedication to politics, culminating in his role as the President, portraying the spirit of a seasoned political leader. 

郭佩奇畢業於國立台北藝術大學美術系複合媒材組,並於同校新媒體藝術研究所取得碩士,曾於法國國立高等布爾日藝術學院短期交換,現為專職藝術家。曾於2017年至泰國「Art No Wall」計劃交流展覽,作品並收藏於泰國孔敬大學美術館,2019年至新加坡參與「新加坡小品2:1:台星對話」交流聯展,2022年至美國洛杉磯18街藝術村駐村。作品曾被高雄文學館、南莊賽夏族民俗文物館、藝術銀行與龍顏基金會等收藏。

Pei-Chi KUO graduated from the Department of Fine Arts, Mixed Media Group, at National Taipei University of the Arts and obtained a master's degree from the Institute of New Media Art at the same university. She also participated in a short-term exchange program at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure d'Art (ENSA) in Bourges, France. Currently, she works as a full-time artist. Her artistic journey includes exhibiting at the "Art No Wall" exchange exhibition in Thailand in 2017, where her works were collected by the Art Museum of Khon Kaen University in Thailand. In 2019, she took part in the "Singapore Skit 2:1: Taiwan-Singapore Dialogue" exchange exhibition in Singapore. Furthermore, in 2022, she engaged in an artist residency at the 18th Street Arts Center in Los Angeles, USA. Several institutions have collected her works, including the Kaohsiung Literary Museum, Nanzhuang Saisiyat Folklore Museum, Art Bank Taiwan, and the Long Yen Foundation.
