Dynasty Gallery will participate in T3 PHOTO ASIA 2026, taking place from October 17 to 19 at TOFROM YAESU in Tokyo’s Yaesu district. This year, we will present The Children Branded by Leprosy, a major body of work by Taiwanese documentary photographer LIN Kuo-Chang (1951–2025). Beginning in 2000, LIN repeatedly traveled to leprosy villages in the Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture of Sichuan, China, documenting the lives, education, and living conditions of local residents and children for more than a decade. The series embodies the belief that guided his lifelong practice: “to see, to document, to help.”

LIN Kuo-Chang

LIN joined the China Times as a photojournalist in 1981. Nearly three decades in news photography shaped his belief that documentary photography is not a one-time act of observation, but requires returning to the same people and places over time. In 2000, at the invitation of his former colleague CHANG Ping-Yi, he first traveled to Liangshan as a volunteer. He continued to use his annual leave to revisit communities in Meigu, Yuexi, Yanyuan, Jinyang, and elsewhere, transforming an initial encounter into more than a decade of documentation and companionship.

The Children Branded by Leprosy focuses on a generation of children growing up in leprosy villages. LIN’s concern extended beyond the disease itself to the poverty, lack of access to education, and social stigma surrounding it. Rather than dramatizing hardship, he photographed ordinary moments of children studying, playing, and working, allowing the people and their surroundings to speak for themselves. In 2004, the series received the Best Foreign Photographer Award and Individual Portfolio Award at the DongGang International Photo Festival in Korea. LIN donated the entire prize of ten million Korean won to support the children’s education. Through his sustained engagement, photography became for LIN not simply a means of observing reality, but a way of responding to it.
